Understanding Water-Filter Claims and Laboratory Evidence
Water-filter laboratory reports often contain impressive contaminant-reduction figures. However, these results are most useful when considered alongside the exact filter tested, the test conditions, the incoming contaminant concentration and the volume of water processed.
This guide explains some of the terminology commonly found in water-filter reports and highlights important questions customers may wish to consider when comparing products. It is intended to make laboratory information easier to understand—not to provide a technical certification, independent scientific assessment or guarantee of product performance.
Independent Laboratory Testing and Manufacturer Information
When a report describes independent laboratory testing, it generally means that the physical testing was performed by a laboratory separate from the filter manufacturer.
The manufacturer, supplier or distributor may still have selected the product samples, commissioned the testing and paid the laboratory. This is common and does not automatically make the results unreliable. However, it is different from an independent organisation selecting a product for testing or operating an ongoing certification program.
Where available, customers should consider:

Tested Concentration and Challenge Water
Laboratory testing is generally conducted using water prepared with a known concentration of the contaminant being investigated. This is sometimes described as challenge water.
Challenge water may differ considerably from ordinary Australian tap water. It may contain a higher contaminant concentration or be prepared under controlled conditions designed to test a filter’s performance.
Results may also be influenced by:

A result produced under specified laboratory conditions should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every household or water supply will produce an identical result.
Percentage Reduction and Final Effluent Concentration
Percentage reduction describes the difference between the contaminant concentration entering the filter and the concentration measured in the filtered water.
The filtered sample is often described as the final or effluent sample.
For example, if the incoming water contained 100 units of a contaminant and the filtered water contained one unit, the reported reduction would be 99%.
The percentage alone does not always provide the complete picture. It can also be useful to consider:

The volume of water processed before the sample was taken
A high percentage reduction may still leave a measurable concentration when the incoming level is unusually high. Conversely, a lower percentage reduction may result in a low final concentration when the incoming level was already relatively low.
Testing at Different Stages of Filter Life
Some reports test a new filter near the beginning of its use. Other reports test performance after a specified quantity of water has passed through the filter. More comprehensive testing may collect samples at several stages of the filter’s operating life.
These approaches provide different information.
A successful test on a new filter demonstrates performance under the conditions used at that point in the test. It does not necessarily establish that the same level of performance will continue throughout the filter’s advertised service life.
Testing after hundreds or thousands of litres can provide additional information about sustained performance. Customers should therefore look for the total test volume and the point at which each sample was collected.
Not every laboratory report contains all this information.
A Reduction Test Does Not Automatically Prove Full Filter Capacity
A contaminant-reduction result and an advertised filter-life estimate are not necessarily the same thing.
For example, if a filter successfully reduced a contaminant after 1,500 litres had been processed, the report may provide evidence of performance under the stated conditions through that tested volume. That result does not automatically establish identical performance at 3,000, 10,000 or 20,000 litres.

Actual filter life can vary with incoming water quality, contaminant levels, usage, installation and maintenance. Customers should follow the replacement guidance provided for the particular product and water conditions.
NSF/ANSI Certification and “Tested to” a Standard
The terms certified, tested to and tested according to do not necessarily mean the same thing.
Formal certification to an NSF/ANSI standard generally involves evaluation by an authorised certification organisation. Depending on the certification program, it may include product testing, verification of materials, manufacturing-facility inspections and ongoing compliance requirements.
A statement that a filter was “tested to NSF/ANSI Standard 42” or “tested according to NSF/ANSI Standard 53” may mean that a laboratory used a test method or performance criterion associated with that standard.
It does not necessarily mean that the complete product is currently certified or listed by NSF or another authorised certification organisation.

Results Apply to the Product Identified in the Report
Laboratory results should generally be attributed only to the specific filter element or cartridge identified in the report.
Similar-looking filters can perform differently because of variations in:

Manufacturing method
A result for one cartridge should not automatically be transferred to another product simply because it fits the same housing or appears to use similar filtration technology.

Superseded Products and Updated Reports
Filter models, formulations, manufacturing arrangements and supporting documentation can change over time.
An older report may still provide useful historical information, but customers should check whether:

Why “Reduce” Is Usually More Appropriate Than “Remove”
The word reduce is generally more appropriate when describing water-filter performance because results can vary with the water supply, contaminant concentration, flow rate, installation, filter age and maintenance.
A laboratory may sometimes report 100% reduction within the tested sample. It may also report that the contaminant was below the laboratory’s detection or reporting limit.
“Below the detection limit” means the laboratory did not measure the contaminant above its stated threshold. It does not necessarily establish that absolutely no contaminant molecules remained.
For this reason, terms such as reduce, reported reduction and below the laboratory’s reporting limit are often more accurate than making an unqualified claim of complete removal.
